The DA Needs You!

So I admit it. We've done jack shit this summer. I had epic plans, they failed. But there is still a faint glimmer of hope for next year. Maybe someone is still reading this. Maybe you want to write something. Maybe you want to challenge me to single combat and let God decide who shall be editor.

I don't know what's going to happen next year. Is there something you want the DA to do? Then do it! I can probably even find a way to fund it.

I know that the DA likes to be the snarky observer, pointing out the foibles of our student leaders and of our student followers. And we thank you for that.

However, you are all very bright, very motivated students yourselves. The DA could really make a difference on campus if they were to focus on a very small number of student issues that you find important. Find 2-3 that you thought were particularly ridiculous on this campus (there should be no shortage of choices) and try to educate people fully and get those things changed. Obviously, I'm not talking about idiotic things like the knoll. I mean really challenging UBC and the RCMP on their liquor policies. Or how UBC is all talk and zero action on a wide range of things. Or how shitty our athletics are, compared to the fees we pay.

You may think that will make you no better than the AMS hacks. By no means should you be tempted to join the AMS, or regularly hold 6-hour meetings. But I do feel that there is a lot that can be accomplished working outside of the bureaucracy of student and university government. This campus really needs motivated students who can approach things in an intelligent manner to push for the things that matter to them.
